Folic acid fortification in grains is a common practice in the US and many other countries to prevent birth defects in the neural tube such as spina bifida, anacephaly, cleft lip, and cleft palate. The benefits of this supplementation have been proven, but in a society in which vitamin and supplement use is common and many categories of foods are fortified, we are beginning to see the dangers of over supplementation. Excess folic acid has been linked to cancer promotion and autism, so at what point are we facing too much?
